First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ
Arts, Music...
We take the arts seriously at First Congregational and were proud to be the first recipient of Rhodes Colleges' CODA Award for our leadership in community arts. Our sanctuary space provides concert and rehearsal space for a number of Memphis arts groups, and we are honored to share our building facilities with True Story Pictures, the MeDiA Co-op, Aardvarks (a music program for young children and their parents), Desert Rose Dance and the Memphis Men's Chorus.
Contact Julia Hicks about using space in our building for arts events.
Talk to Annabeth Novitzki (278-6786, ext. 2), our Arts Coordinator, for more information on getting involved in the arts at First Congo!
Vocal Choirs
Two vocal choirs guide our Sunday morning worship service. The Vocal Choir rehearses Wednesday nights from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. We sing music ranging from gospel to classical to global music! Rehearsals are in the Choir Room - directly east of the sanctuary. The Advanced Choir meets on Saturday mornings from 11:00 a.m. - noon. This choir is by audition only.
The Handbell Choir that rehearses Wednesday nights from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. (It's a big help for participation in the Hand bell Choir if you already read music.) The Choirs help lead our worship services on Sunday mornings.
The Percussion Choir meets Sunday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. Bring your drum and we'll work together as an ensemble to develop our improvisational skills and to learn how to facilitate worship music, too.
Visual Arts
We have a beautiful sanctuary and love to use art to share our faith and witness! Annabeth Novitzki coordinates our visual Arts program and will be happy to talk with you about our ongoing projects. You can talk to her at 278-6786, ext. 2
